Mildly Horrible Tales Book Cover Poll
The tricky part with this collection is that some stories are adorable in a gothic, dark way, while others are very horrible. I would love a cover that represents both. It’s important to note that this is a collection meant for adults (or at least 15 or older) and is not suitable for kids.
If you missed last week’s post. This is how I described the collection:
Some of the stories are truly only mildly horrible, like the short story where a child comes to terms with losing her father in the sweetest way. Or the disappointment of a dessert that turns sour. Or the one when a ghost discovers her first crush.
However, some of the stories are horrific stories of body horror or murderous revenge, making the story the most horrible it could be (for my brand—I don’t write gore. My horror is more psychological).
Genres: Horror, fantasy, women’s fiction.
Tagline: Vengeance, death, and magic to soothe the soul
Logic behind the title and tagline: Whether the story is sweet or violent, there’s a sense of justice to 75% of the stories. It’s soothing to know that good people will win and bad/rude people will be punished (sometimes quite badly—think of Ghost Boy, one of my freebies that will be in the collection). The remaining 25% are the ones that keep one up at night, wondering if the characters are doing okay. They aren’t all scary per se, just makes you wonder. A good example is my freebie, The Dream Thief, that will be in this collection as well. The mixture adds balance to the collection. Not everyone gets what they want, but most people do. ‘Tis life.
If you don’t have Ghost Boy and The Dream Thief, they are both in the free book section above or on my book list (linked below).

The Poll
I took this screenshot from Canva, so #1 wasn’t a final contender. From left to right, it starts with #2 and ends with #5. Which is your favorite … especially when it comes to the print edition?
My Over-analysis of the Book Covers
I love the big, bright moon, but it doesn’t exactly say murder or body horror, does it?
The dark moon feels more ominous. I feel the same way about the red clouds. But does it make the cover blend in on a bookshelf?
The no cloud cover feels a bit plain … right? Or maybe not? It does make the purple feel a shade darker, even though it’s not.
But I’ve stared at and edited this cover for HOURS. I really can’t tell which one is better anymore.

I had the opposite reaction to the bright moon. The other covers (imo) leaned more toward the darker stories the bright moon gives a hint at the lighter stories
